Q Community Study Project Children’s Literature: A Gateway to the World Final Project This is a team project with a group grade and individual grade. Teams will present the final project of this study as their final exam, during our exam period. Enduring Understandings: Learning about the lives of other people helps to build empathy, respect, understanding and connection. Learning about why people choose to leave their country helps us to understand the socio-political-historical contexts of a ‘new arrival’ community (immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers). Essential Questions: What can I learn from hearing a personal story? Learning Outcomes 1. Students will be able to describe specific circumstances (current and historical) that led up to the people’s (Syrians or Guatemalans) decision to flee their country. 2. Students will be able to select and evaluate quality children’s books that relate to their community, reasons for migrating, and themes of the human condition. 3. Students will be able to write about and discuss the power of Global Children’s Literature to demonstrate a sensitivity toward and appreciation for learning existent in perspectives and experiences different from one’s own (Curry College Global goal). Web based article about the crises in your country of study that is forcing people to choose to leave. (learn historical and current context) Podcasts or other audio recording about either the crises/situation in your country and/or human stories of folks who migrated out of your country. (human interest) 2 Children’s picture books about your country specifically and/or the crises in your country of study. Discuss with each other why these are quality books (accuracy, lack of stereotypes, assists us in deepening our perspectives?) 2 children’s books about refugee or immigrant experiences generally (like The Journey which we read in class) and that make connections to the human condition. Discuss with each other why these are quality books (accuracy, lack of stereotypes, assists us in deepening our perspectives?) Video that shows or tells stories of immigrant/refugee experiences in the U.S. From your “community group” preferred. Rationale “Blurbs” for curated Padlet Resources Individuals will write a short “blurb” for each resource they post on Padlet. Briefly explain why this resource? (i.e. what did it teach you, or why is it a good resource for learning the learning outcomes) Summary of Learning Please write this on the same document as your Rationale “Blurbs”. It is very helpful to me to not have to open a lot of documents. (thank you) This is an individual 1.5-2 page paper where you are to write about the 3 Learning Outcomes 1. How does reading Global Children’s Literature help YOU to demonstrate a sensitivity toward and an “appreciation for learning existent in perspectives and experiences different from one’s own” (Curry College Global goal). Final Presentation and Paper IN CLASS May 5th With a Powerpoint/ Google slides and your Padlet you should demonstrate the following: • About your country. Orient us to where it is, what it looks like, and some demographics. • About the crises. What has been and is going (past and present) on that force people to decide to leave? • About picture books that illustrate the experiences of people living there or leaving there. • About picture books that connect to the human condition and the broad experiences of immigrants or refugees. • How your novel helped tell the bigger story of the people who leave your country of study. Presentation participation: • Everyone should have a role. Most groups have 4 people. You might have 2 present the slide show and 2 present the Padlet (highlights). By END of EXAM PERIOD (May 10th 10 pm) • The Final paper (one document) should have these components all in one doc
